How to password protect excel file using internal tool?

To secure your excel file you need to create an excel file in your system and when you have done with your work save your file and follow the below steps to protect the file.

1. On Windows Machine

  • Click on File which is top left of the Menu bar.

  • Then click on Info option on left side of Window. Example is given below.

  • Click to encrypt with password and new pop-up window will open then enter your password you want to protect the file.

  • Again re-enter the same password for confirmation then your file is protected with password.

  • Exit the file and reopen the same file then you will get password protected pop-up then enter the same password which is entered while protecting the file.

2. On Mac Machine

First open excel file and save it to your machine and then follow below steps to protect the file in Mac Machine.

  • Open the excel which you want to protect.
  • Click on File which is at the top left of the Menu Bar.
  • Then find Password and click on Password.
  • Then the new pop-up screen will open.
  • Enter the password you want to protect the Excel file.

Bonce Point – You will ask to set a password for opening the excel file and another password to editing it. you can choose both options it depends on your choice.

  • Once you click OK you will ask to re-enter the password that you have entered before.
  • Then click OK, Now your password is set on your Excel File

Now you need password to open this Excel Sheet. Make sure the password you have entered is easily remember to you or write the password in safe location. If you forget the password then there is no password recovery option.

How to Remove Password from protected Excel file

1. On Windows Machine

  • Open your file on which you want to remove password protection.
  • Click on File Option which is top of the left side of the Menu Bar.
  • Find Info Option and click on it.
  • Click on the Protect Workbook to open drop-down menu.

  • Then click on Encrypt with password.
  • One pop-up screen will open clear the password from password field and click on Ok Button.

Now your excel file is no more protected with password. You have removed your password.

2. On Mac Machine

  • Open your file on which you want to remove password protection.
  • Click on File in Menu Bar at the left top of Menu Bar.
  • Click on the password option.
  • Then a new pop-up window will open. You have to delete the password in the password field.
  • Then click on the OK button.

Now your excel file is no more protected with password. You have removed your password.

Extra Microsoft Excel Protection –

It can protect your files in different methods.

  • Mark as Final – Let the reader know this excel sheet is final no need to change it in this file and if another user wants to change anything in the excel sheet then the user is not able to do any changes.
  • Protect Current Sheet – If you protected your excel sheet and given a password to another user and they want to change some data on it they don’t have the access they need to enter a second password that is Protect current sheet password.
  • Restrict Access – These methods use in big company’s to restricts access by using different templates.
  • Add a Digital Signature – This is used to protect the file in between sender and receiver.
